How dog-friendly is the Dominican Republic?
Fine sand under your paws, palm trees in the wind and turquoise blue water – for many, a Caribbean vacation sounds like pure paradise. But what does it look like for your dog? The Dominican Republic can be a great destination for people and animals – provided you are well prepared. Here you will find important information that Sheffields Wuddele and DoggyVibes have collected for HolaWuff.
First of all, a note about dogs: you should only take a four-legged friend with you if you really want to stay longer in the Dominican Republic. For a vacation of two or three weeks, the trip and the climatic conditions in the Dominican Republic are generally far too stressful for a dog. There are also few opportunities to walk your dog.
Emigrating to the Dominican Republic with a dog
However, if you are planning to stay on the Caribbean island for longer, for example to live or spend the winter, then our tips may help you. However, dogs don’t have a particularly easy life in the Dom Rep. They often lead a neglected life as watchdogs, are often beaten, at best they are ignored; most street dogs are not neutered. The result: even more animal suffering.
We experienced a wonderful exception in El Cortecito. In front of the Sol Tropical Residence, which also allows dogs, security guard Miguel lovingly looks after a handful of friendly street dogs that live there. Anna, a kind-hearted dog, currently has puppies and Miguel, who doesn’t have much himself, tries to support the family as best he can. <3
🐾 Dog-friendly accommodation Dom Rep
In popular regions such as Punta Cana, Santo Domingo or Las Terrenas, the range of dog-friendly accommodation is increasing. Some hotels not only allow dogs, but also offer little extras: from bowl sets and dog beds to dog sitting. However, we four-legged friends are often only allowed in the room, which makes it more difficult.

Please note: Many beaches require dogs to be kept on a lead, and in some cases there are time restrictions for visiting with a dog. Dogs are not always allowed on public beaches in particular. However, where there is no plaintiff, there is no judge, usually nobody says anything – but it is safer to ask on site.
It is easier to have a good time with your dog in vacation apartments and vacation homes, as they are usually allowed on a lead in the green areas/pool area.

To ensure that everything runs smoothly, you should observe the following guidelines:

Plan early: contact

The right accommodation:
Holiday homes with a fenced garden or ground-floor rooms are ideal. Air conditioning is also important – because the Caribbean can be very hot.
Walks & adventures:
Find out about dog-friendly beaches, cafés and hiking trails. In Las Terrenas, for example, there are hidden bays where dogs are welcome – it’s best to ask locally.
Travel accessories:
Think of a bowl, favorite toy, first-aid kit, mosquito and heat protection and a muzzle (if necessary). A harness instead of a collar is recommended for air travel.
