SCAN animal shelter

SCAN is a registered charity that rescues and re-homes abandoned cats and dogs in the Northern Costa Blanca. Many animals that arrive at our shelter have been mistreated, are sick, half starved and some are only hours away from death. Animals that leave our shelter live in caring, loving homes and are never mistreated or starved again.

SCAN has a NO KILL policy for healthy animals: We keep the promise we make to every cat and dog that comes into our shelter, “You’re a SCAN pet now, you’re safe.”

Our mission is to protect those who cannot speak for themselves. We:

• RESCUE Animals in danger
• We CARE about them (proper food, veterinary care and safe, comfortable and dry accommodation)
• give you love and care
• FIND a new, permanent HOME so that they can enjoy the rest of their lives

As soon as an animal enters our shelter, it is given everything it needs to recover and thrive. We work closely with the local authorities, the police and local vets. Everyone involved is focused on the welfare and care of animals in need.

From our purpose-built center, we run our adoption program, possibly the most active and effective in the region. The statistics for this initiative are astounding: we place 96% of our SCAN animals locally in Spain and adopt in the UK, Guernsey and the Channel Islands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Finland and the USA.

We are dedicated to both a set of international guidelines for animal welfare known as “The Five Freedoms in Animal Care” and the principles on which our philosophy is founded: that we will always be committed, caring, effective and compassionate.

SCAN does not receive any money from the local, regional or national government. We are entirely funded by the generosity of SCAN supporters around the world, with income coming from our events, the SCAN Boutique and our collection tins. As we are independently funded, we work free from centrally set quotas and management protocols that would jeopardize the welfare of our animals.
