Vacations with dogs in Germany: relaxation and adventure for two and four-legged friends

Germany is a true paradise for dog owners who want to spend their vacation together with their four-legged friend. Whether it’s mudflat hiking on the North Sea, sandy beaches on the Baltic Sea, walks on the heath, hiking in the low mountain ranges or mountain hiking in the Alps – there’s something for everyone. I remember how much I enjoyed hiking in the Bavarian Alps with my boss and my mistress (see picture above)
Diverse vacation destinations for every taste
The most popular regions for a vacation with a dog are the coastal regions and the Alps. But the Black Forest, the Harz Mountains, the Westerwald and the Eifel also offer ideal conditions for dog owners and are well worth a visit.
Reach dream destinations by car
A major advantage for dog owners is that most destinations in Germany can be reached by car within one to two days’ drive. In Germany, however, there are legal regulations for traveling with a dog in the car: the dog must be secured in the car so that it does not impair road safety. Suitable safety options: Seat belt for dogs.
Dog crate (transport box).
Dog grille or net (for estate cars or SUVs).
Separating grille (permanently installed in the car). In addition, dogs must not be left unattended in the car in extreme heat or cold. But every responsible dog owner knows this anyway ;). Remember to take regular breaks so that your furry friend can stretch their legs and have a drink.
Dog-friendly accommodation
Many providers in Germany have specialized in the needs of dogs. Whether it’s a campsite, vacation apartment, vacation home, guesthouse or hotel. They are often not only welcome there, but also receive extras such as dog baskets, bowls and blankets.
North Sea and Baltic Sea – sand, sea and fun
The German coastal regions are particularly popular for a vacation with a dog. Many dog beaches along the North Sea and Baltic Sea offer plenty of space for romping, digging and swimming. Places such as St. Peter-Ording, Sylt or Rügen are known for their dog-friendly accommodation and walking paths that run for miles along the coast.
Bavarian Alps – pure nature for adventurers
The Alps are a dream destination for active dogs and their owners. Hiking routes through the impressive mountain landscapes, crystal-clear lakes such as Königssee or Chiemsee and numerous alpine huts where dogs are very welcome make Bavaria the perfect vacation destination. From easy walks to challenging mountain tours – there is something for everyone here.
Black Forest and Eifel – forests and relaxation
The Black Forest and the Eifel offer a mixture of untouched nature and charming villages. Vast forests, rolling hills and dog-friendly vacation homes invite you to relax. Especially nice: many hiking trails are also suitable for older dogs, as there are hardly any steep climbs.
City breaks with a dog – experience culture
Even though I’m not a fan of cities at all, there are supposed to be four-legged friends who think it’s cool. My old buddy Paulchen, for example, a rough-haired dachshund, thought it was absolutely cool to trot through the city. If you feel the same way, cities like Berlin, Hamburg or Munich not only offer dog-friendly parks and restaurants, but also numerous places to stay where four-legged friends are very welcome.
Tips for a vacation with your dog in Germany
- Dog beaches and parks: Find out in advance about dog-friendly areas at your destination.
- Accommodation: Many hotels, vacation apartments and campsites welcome dogs. There are often even extras such as dog beds or feeding stations.
- Equipment: Pack everything your dog needs – from a lead and food bowl to a first-aid kit. We have already described this in detail in our guide.
- Consideration: Please also pay attention to other vacationers. Some are afraid of us. Very important: When we do our big business, don’t just leave it lying around, but dispose of it.
